Sutton Local Committee to meet on 9 September

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 6 September, 2021

Following the government’s easing of the lockdown rules, the Sutton Local Committee will be meeting face to face for the first time since Feb 2020.  The meeting will be at 7pm at the Salvation Army, Benhill Avenue.  Due to the social distancing rules admission to the meeting will be limited. To reserve your spot and help to shape your area, email [email protected].

It is not possible to live-stream the meeting, but a recording will be available after the meeting.  It is hoped that this restriction will only be for this meeting, and that the next, due on 11 November will be open to the public in the usual way.

Issues being discussed include a report on public realm improvements, Sutton Housing Partnership’s Community Investment Programme, and an update on the street cleaning service consultation.

Public Realm includes the funding for:

  1. various improvements being made by the Friends to the Rosehill Parks.  These include a Social Orchard, a Picnic Table, a Lectern information board and a water bowser for tree maintenance.  This will prove an additional attraction to this popular park.
  2. the provision of Festive lights at the northern end of the High St.  These lights create a focal point for the High Street over the Christmas period and encourage residents to visit the High Street.
  3. in partnership with Sutton Garden Suburb, repair and repainting of  the existing fence line located at Woodend and Greenhill and a number of lamp columns.

Flower baskets at the pedestrian barriers at Sutton Green have recently been replanted and look splendid in this location.

There will be an update on the Street Cleansing Service consultation.  Earlier in the summer the Council consulted residents.  See here. Although feedback from our regular residents’ surveys tells us that satisfaction with street cleanliness has improved in recent years, satisfaction is still not as high as we would like it to be.  The Council consulted residents on a wide range of issues including street litter, dog fouling, enforcement, litter bins, fly tipping and gully cleaning.  We look forward to getting some feedback on this at the meeting.

We will be hearing about the Stronger Sutton Conversation – in the light of the COVID pandemic, we now have an opportunity to reshape our borough, including how we work, how we move around, how we shop and how we relax and have fun.  The Council wants to understand how Covid-19 affected residents and how you would like us – Sutton Council and our partners – to improve things for you as we move forward. How can we make transport, parks, health care, our high streets and shops better for you and your family?  The consultation is here and runs until the end of September.

Ruth, Steve and Marlene
