Sutton Council granted injunction to prevent illegal encampments

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 23 August, 2018

Following a series of illegal incursions on parks and green spaces in Sutton, the Council has  obtained a temporary injunction to prevent encampments.   The injunction forbids the occupation of council owned land and depositing of waste, for an initial period of three months.

A copy of the order is being posted at the entrances to all parks and open spaces, allotments, some cemeteries, public car parks, housing estates and leisure centres.

The council will be returning to the High Court in November to seek a full three year injunction and officers will be working to provide evidence to support this application.

The injunction carries a power of arrest for a breach, and anyone breaching the injunction order may be held in contempt of court and could be imprisoned, fined or have their assets seized.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said: “We are rightly proud of our parks and green spaces in Sutton and we know they are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Over the past few weeks we’ve been working with colleagues in the Metropolitan Police to make sure our open spaces remain welcoming for all.

“This interim injunction order will now allow us to better protect our parks from illegal encampments and allow us to move on more quickly anybody that tries to bring vehicles and caravans into our parks. We will now seek to secure a longer term injunction to allow us to make sure Sutton remains a pleasant place in which to live, work or visit.”
