Road safety improvements get underway

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 5 August, 2019

The works will include:

Work will shortly begin on road safety improvements in Collingwood Road and Anton Crescent, following the consultation with residents earlier this year.  The works are planned to begin in the week commencing Monday 12 August 2018.  It is expected that most of the works around Westbourne School will be completed before the beginning of term.

  1. Width restrictions with priority give-ways to replace the existing refuge islands and speed cushions along Collingwood Road between the railway bridge and the By pass
  2. Reversing the one-way in Anton Crescent.
  3. Raised junction entry treatment, at Anton Crescent, Alexandra Avenue and Chaucer Road, to improve sight lines
  4. Improvement to footways and safer walking routes along Anton Crescent leading to Westbourne Primary school, with a remodelling of the junction at the entrance to the school
  5. Improvements to signage and road markings, with a flashing ‘school’ sign and more emphasis on the 20 mph limit.

A map showing the proposals is here.  It will be necessary for there to be temporary traffic management arrangements in place for the duration of the works, which are expected to last around 10 weeks.

The works will necessarily be disruptive, but the end result will be improvements in road safety for our school children and for local residents.  Many thanks to the residents who have supported the proposals and who campaigned for this over the last two years.

Ruth, Marlene and Steve.
