Sutton Library has re-opened after its major refit. The much brighter and livelier library makes better use of the space available, improve accessibility for all customers and draw in more young people by making use of new technology.
The book stock has been refreshed and the IT has been upgraded. Most books have been brought downstairs, where they can be viewed and borrowed more easily.
Also downstairs is the children’s library, making it more accessible, and creating a stimulating and safe environment for children and parents to use, right next to the cafe. Autism friendly features will be incorporated into the children’s design and there will be a dementia friendly area for adults. The existing staff toilets have been refurbished to become public toilets and baby changing facilities are also be available next to the children’s library.
Improved study spaces are on the upper floors, and on the top floor there is a new family history centre with dedicated access to Ancestry.com. Some objects from the collections and museum cases will be positioned around the library to bring heritage to all aspects of the library. Also on the top floor is the new gallery space currently celebrating 100 years of women’s franchise featuring an exhibition on Women in Sutton.
Do give it a visit next time you are in the town centre.
