Traveller caravans on Rosehill Park

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 13 July, 2018

Around half a dozen Traveller caravans have entered Rosehill Park. Council officers are carrying out the legally required safeguarding and welfare checks as part of moving them on quickly.   The necessary court order is also being obtained.  When this has been completed we will again be looking at the security of the site

When will the ever elected Lib Dems in Sutton petition Parliament for special local powers to be award authorities e.g. Sutton, for continued incursions and encampments?

The travellers have no wish to settle in the area, they are transient by nature so affording accommodation or land is a waste of time. Unless they will pay into the local economy by means of tax on income i.e. declaring income, which would be unlikely, let be honest, they are forever a drain as is reported in your budget reviews.

Why do we always have to suffer in the same way?
Will the council allocate some of it’s outreach-to-travellers budget to clear up THEIR mess? Seems only far that the money WE pay into local taxes for THEIR benefit be used to clear up THEIR mess?!

    • Ruth, Marlene, and Steve says:

We have agreed a process for dealing with these incursions with the police, other agencies and the courts, which means that the legal requirements for welfare and safeguarding checks, getting a court order and getting it enforced and the travellers evicted all happens speedily – within a few days.

This occupation of the park is illegal. They broke the gate locks to gain access and yes we will clear up after them. Groups such as these move from area to area, and are not interested in the permanent camp sites that are provided.

We share your frustration about the cost to the public purse and the effort needed to deal with these illegal incursions and clearing up the mess afterwards. Along with other councils we have lobbied MPs to change the legislation so we have more powers. Please do contact your local MP and add your voice to ours
