During the last few weeks we have been calling on residents affected by the Council’s parking proposals to make sure we fully understand your views.  The results of the Council’s consultation have now been published on their website here, together with proposals for the next stage.  

As your local councillors we are still fighting to maximise the parking space available to local residents, while making sure parking is safe and does not block access to roads or drives.  We are concerned that the continued development of flats in the High St, the request by residents of St Helier for parking restrictions in roads near the hospital, and the possible development of a new school in Rosehill Park will add to the pressures of commuter parking in the area.  Now is the opportunity to address this.

The response to the consultation, as with many such exercises, has not been high, but our discussions with you on the doorstep, and from your feedback to our leaflets, have enabled us to get a clearer idea of what you want.  It is unfortunate that residents living outside the ward have circulated leaflets suggesting that the Council will be imposing Controlled Parking Zones across the whole area with paid permits – this is not true, and never has been proposed.

Having listened to your views we are proposing the following for Sutton North:

• A residents’ only Permit Parking Area for Aultone Way, Woodend and Greenhill – note that this is the only new residents’ parking scheme proposed with paid parking permits;
• Free parking bays with one hour restrictions in Rosehill Gardens;
• Additional free parking restrictions in Longford and Chudleigh Gardens;
• Extending the existing CPZ in Benhilton Gardens to the rest of the road
• Extension of existing double yellow lines in some other roads to ease access problems.

The full proposals are on the Council website, and will be on display at Sutton Library on Thurs 27 June from 9am to 1pm and from 5pm to 8pm.  Councillors and officers will be there to answer questions.  All new parking proposals have to be subject to a statutory Traffic Management Order consultation.  For the Aultone Way scheme this will be from 4 to 25 July.  The statutory consultation for the other proposals will be in September.  Implementation is expected to be in the autumn.
