Waste collection update

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 2 May, 2017

Over the last four weeks we have been following up urgent cases where residents have had their collections missed or did not receive their new bins.  Clearly the new service did not get off to a good start.  We are sorry about this and are grateful to you all for your patience.
We have got a fair idea of where the problems are in Sutton North – mainly narrow roads, flats and flytipping by bins.  Otherwise nearly all streets are now getting collections on their due dates.
We have made it clear that outstanding problems need to be cleared urgently.  Veolia have brought in extra crews and narrower vehicles to deal with the issues, and have been working through weekends to catch up.
If you have any remaining issues please report them online via the council website to free up the phone lines for people who don’t have internet access.
There is a dedicated webpage with information and special links for reporting issues – look under Waste and Recycling on the Sutton Council website.
This page also allows you to check the collection days for your recycling and general waste at your address. The address finder is a bit quirky, especially for flats. If you enter your address and it says it is not recognised try entering your flat or house number, and then the street rather than the name of the flat block. Then enter your postcode. If that doesn’t work just enter your flat number and postcode.
All issues reported online will be logged for action.  If you still have problems reporting your issues online then please contact us.
If you have still not received new recycling bins; or your street does not appear to be on a scheduled round; or you are in a block of flats and it is clear that Veolia still do not understand what your collection should be, then please tell us as well as reporting it to the council. That way we can understand the extent of the problems and take it up with senior council officers and Veolia.
Not sure what goes in which bin? There is an A-Z of rubbish and recycling on the council website.
Thanks again for your understanding.  The new system will make a big improvement to our recycling, reducing the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill.  Also it is saving the Council over £1m a year, as the system is a standard one used in many other parts of the country and we benefit from this.  With the budget cuts being imposed on us, these big savings are really important.
Ruth, Marlene and Steve
