Summer round up

by Sam, Ruth and Chris on 7 September, 2023

Here is a quick round up of what we have done recently in the summer months.

Attending local events

We attended the Friends of Sutton Green Community Fayre and helped run some of the stalls including Hook a Duck and Splat the Rat. It was a tremendous day and a big thank you to Friends of Sutton Green for organising such a lovely family event. We also attended the Sutton Fire Station Open Day and took part in a community walkabout in Chaucer Gardens. As your Councillors, we joined the local police ward panel to discuss community safety issues and the need for more police patrols in our area.

Speaking at the Sutton Full Council Meeting

Both of us spoke at the Full Council meeting a few weeks ago, supporting the Lift the Ban motion to allow asylum seekers to be able to work after six months and not have to rely on financial support from the taxpayer. We are glad to say the motion passed and Sutton Council is now part of the Lift the Ban coalition and joins other councils in calling for more support for asylum seekers looking for work.

Standing up for Sutton

We were part of the team of local Councillors who travelled to City Hall to present the Council’s 10,600 signature petition calling on the Mayor of London to rethink ULEZ expansion. At the beginning of the month, we celebrated the 75th Birthday of our NHS by giving St Helier staff a booklet full of thank you messages from Sutton residents. Ruth also attended the Sutton College Achievement Awards ceremony and spoke at the Healthwatch 10 year anniversary celebration.
